What to do after a car accident?

Published on January 26th, 2016 by The Illinois Hammer Injury Law Firm

Thousands of lives are taken each year because of car accidents.  The amount of traffic accidents in the state of Illinois keeps increasing and now averages to about 800 a day!  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is another car accident every 6 seconds. Being involved in a car accident can be a very hectic experience. The aftermath of an accident can leave one distraught, not knowing what to do next. There are very important things that must be done at the scene of an accident and soon after. Below you will find a few recommendations on the next steps to take if you have been involved in an accident.

Make sure everyone is okay

Before you leave the scene of an accident check on all the drivers and passengers. If you leave you may be looked at as a hit-and-run driver and face criminal charges, especially if someone sustained injuries or was killed.

Call for help

Never move a person who has been injured unless a hazard requires you to move them. Call for medical assistance. If there has been significant damage to your vehicle then you will need to call an officer and get the officer’s name and obtain a copy of the police report.

Collect Information

Take pictures of any injuries and damages to your vehicle and any other vehicle involved in the accident. Make sure you get the other driver’s name, number, driver license number and insurance information. Never admit fault. The state of Illinois is a modified comparative negligence state, meaning you can recover damages from any party that is more at fault than yourself in an accident.

Hire a car Accident Attorney

Keep track of all medical treatment and expenses for them as well as all the days you missed work. Before settling and signing any paperwork  with the insurance company, consider hiring a car accident attorney to ensure you’re getting what you deserve in a settlement.
