How to avoid a construction site accident

Published on January 26th, 2016 by The Illinois Hammer Injury Law Firm

Each year 150,000 job site injuries occur nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration. With 130 million construction workers on  the job at any given time, accidents and injuries are an inevitability. Although you don’t always know when an accident will occur, you can be aware of the job site hazards and take the right preventative measures. A few ways to avoid construction site accidents are as followed:

Be aware

Make sure you are aware of any changes to the job site and if any machinery will be used at a different location on the site. If there is new machinery, make sure you have had proper training before trying to operate it. Since there are constantly moving parts on sites, it is very important to be aware of any trip hazards. According to OSHA the most common safety violations for construction areas are:

  • Fall protection
  • Unsecured scaffolding
  • Ladder stability
  • Electrical wiring problems

Always wear your safety gear

Wear appropriate safety gear when working on projects like hard hats and eye protection. Wear a harness if you are working on scaffolding and rooftops. To reduce the chances of getting hit by a vehicle on site, wear high-visibility apparel like a reflective vest.

Take a break

Working long hours of manual labor outdoors can lead to exhaustion which can increase the chances of making a mistake. Know your body, keep yourself hydrated. Make sure to take regular breaks to reduce the chances of an accident.
