Unexpected Dangers of Fall Driving

Published on October 9th, 2019 by The Illinois Hammer Injury Law Firm

With a new season comes new potential dangers on the road. You may not associate fall with an unsafe time to drive, but it’s important to be aware of road conditions that could result in an accident. Our Chicago car accident attorneys, that also serve throughout Illinois, are here to help educate you and keep you safe while on the roads.

Consider the following potential fall driving dangers:

Slippery Leaves

We all know that driving over patches of ice is dangerous, but did you know that leaves have the potential to become extremely slippery as well? In fact, some experts consider accumulated wet leaves as dangerous to drivers as black ice. If you see an upcoming patch of leaves while you’re driving slow down if you can. This will minimize the risk of an accident. If slowing down will put other cars in danger, drive over the leaves as carefully as possible and remain alert.

Increased Traffic

Now that school is back in session, there are more commuters and vehicles on the roads. This ultimately leads to more traffic, during which many drivers become impatient and reckless. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to your end destination. Would you rather be late or never arrive at all?

Fog

With the changing temperatures, fog is also another factor to consider when driving in the fall. Fog may have a huge impact on your driving visibility and depth perception. In this case, it’s tempting to put on your high-beams, but this will only make visibility worse. Remember to turn your lights on, slow down, and stay focused.

To stay safe this fall, make sure that you are watching your speed, remain aware of road conditions and plan accordingly, and always clear frost from your windows before you drive. If you do get into an accident this fall, our Chicago car accident attorneys are a phone call away. We also serve the greater Chicagoland Area and throughout the state of Illinois.
