Accidents happen every day and there is an increase in all types of accidents in the winter months. Personal Injury accidents do not favor any particular group and they can happen to anyone, anywhere. During the winter months the sidewalks, parking lots and streets are icy and sometimes there is an accumulation of snow, these conditions certainly increase the chance of accidents. The reality is that even in good weather, accidents happen and you must be prepared. Knowing what to do when an accident occurs can ensure you recover the maximum value of your case.

Your actions immediately following an accident make the difference in your recovery of damages and are a critical step in the process. With this in mind, here are the important steps you must take in the aftermath of an accident.

Seek Medical Attention –
Before you do anything else, make sure you receive medical attention following an accident. Even if you do not immediately recognize you are injured, some injuries do not present themselves immediately and others may be internal. Should you choose to seek compensation, having your injuries and medical condition well documented is important.

File a Report –
If you’ve been involved in an automobile accident, file a police report. For slip and fall accidents, dog bites or other personal injuries be sure to notify the owner, landlord or authority figure. Be sure to get a copy of the report for your files and the names and phone numbers of the person notified of the accident or injury.

Document the Incident –
Get the name and phone numbers of witnesses who saw the accident take place. Take pictures with your cell phone of the accident scene, surrounding area, dangerous conditions and any injuries. The pictures and witnesses provide evidence of the scene of the accident and will provide more support for your case.

Call an Attorney –
Having an experienced personal injury attorney handling your case; someone who understand all aspects of pursuing a personal injury claim will ensure maximum recovery and allow you to focus on recovery. It is not always easy to prove these types of cases and an experienced personal injury attorney is best equipped to guide you through the process and be your advocate.
